As Macau ushered in the Year of the Snake, Macau International Airport (MIA) witnessed a substantial rise in passenger traffic during the Chinese New Year (CNY) festivities in 2025. Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) reported a dynamic holiday season from January 29 to February 4, with over 170,000 travelers passing through the airport. This marks a 5.4% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2024. Simultaneously, flight movements rose to 1,265, reflecting a 6.7% growth.
The peak of travel demand occurred on February 2 and 3, which marked the fifth and sixth days of the Lunar New Year celebrations. Passenger numbers surged to 26,000 and 25,000 on these days, demonstrating a 4% and 12% rise, respectively, over the previous year.
Market Insights and Recovery Trends
A closer look at travel patterns during the CNY holiday period revealed that routes connecting Macau to Mainland China accounted for half of the total passenger volume. International routes contributed 33%, while flights to and from Taiwan made up 17%. Shanghai, Taipei, and Bangkok remained among the most frequented destinations. Compared to the 2019 Lunar New Year period, overall passenger traffic and flight operations have rebounded to 80% of pre-pandemic levels, signaling a steady recovery in the aviation sector.
Strong Start to 2025
Beyond the CNY holiday rush, MIA’s overall passenger volume for January 2025 nearly reached 680,000, marking a 15.1% year-on-year increase. Flight movements also saw an 8.2% uptick, totaling 5,261 operations. To accommodate the heightened travel demand, MIA has been working closely with airport authorities and service providers to enhance operational efficiency and provide seamless experiences for travelers.
Future Developments and Expansion Plans
Looking ahead, Macau International Airport is set to introduce incentive programs to boost international air traffic and encourage airlines to expand their networks. By implementing strategic initiatives, MIA aims to attract more global passengers and facilitate the launch of new international routes, further cementing its position as a key aviation hub in the region.
