Lal Draman, a serene meadow nestled in the picturesque Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, came alive recently as the much-anticipated Winter Festival attracted nearly 2,500 visitors. Tourists, locals, officials, and media gathered to witness this celebration of culture, adventure, and natural beauty. The meadow, surrounded by majestic deodar and fir trees, served as a stunning backdrop for the festivities.

Organized by the District Administration and the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, in partnership with Tejas Ek Pahal Foundation and the Indian Army, the event aimed to showcase Lal Draman’s tourism potential. The festival began with a symbolic sapling plantation by the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu, underlining a commitment to environmental conservation. Other dignitaries, including the DDC Chairman, Vice Chairperson, DIG Doda, and Deputy Commissioner Doda, also graced the occasion.

The event featured an array of cultural performances, adventure sports, and trekking activities, offering visitors a taste of the region’s rich heritage and scenic allure. Despite its undeniable charm, Lal Draman has struggled to attract consistent tourist attention due to a lack of infrastructure. Located at an altitude of 2,300 meters and just 25 kilometers from Doda town, it remains a largely underdeveloped destination.

Historically, Lal Draman enjoyed a prominent place in school textbooks alongside popular tourist hubs like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Patnitop. However, its development was stalled during the years of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. In recent times, the district administration has taken steps to rekindle interest in this hidden gem. Initiatives like the Lal Draman Fair in summer and the Winter Festival aim to revive its reputation as a tourist hotspot.

While the festival highlighted the meadow’s immense potential, its long-term development hinges on addressing infrastructural challenges. A collaborative effort involving the administration, local stakeholders, and private investment is essential to transform Lal Draman into a sustainable and thriving tourist destination. With events like these, the hope is that this pristine meadow will once again earn its rightful place on Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism map.
