For over 20 years, Parks Canada has been working towards securing land and formulating a comprehensive vision for redeveloping the 200-Block of Banff Avenue in Banff National Park. Now, a major step forward has been made with the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada spearheading an international design competition to conceptualize a new and innovative blueprint for the area.
With funding secured in 2022, Parks Canada initiated extensive site studies and consultations with Indigenous communities, stakeholders, and the public. Feedback from these discussions emphasized the necessity of modernizing infrastructure, enhancing public spaces, and fostering a dynamic and inviting downtown. Additionally, there is strong support for strengthening visitor connections to the national park while exploring housing solutions for eligible residents.
The Banff Avenue Redevelopment Project will adhere to industry best practices, ensuring a meticulous and professional evaluation of submitted designs. The competition, set to conclude by March 2026, aims to attract top-tier architects and planners to envision a forward-thinking and sustainable transformation of the site.
Parks Canada underscores that input gathered from prior engagements will directly inform the competition’s direction. All design proposals must integrate the priorities and cultural values expressed by Indigenous groups, local stakeholders, and the broader community.
As this long-anticipated initiative progresses, Parks Canada remains committed to a transparent and inclusive process, ensuring Canadian voices shape the future of Banff Avenue. Public participation will continue to be a crucial element in decision-making, ensuring the redevelopment aligns with community aspirations.
Regular updates and engagement opportunities will be provided throughout the project, maintaining open communication and accessibility for all stakeholders.
Ron Hallman, President & Chief Executive Officer, Parks Canada “This is a rare, once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine and transform a vital public space in Banff National Park. Parks Canada has listened to the voices of Indigenous communities, stakeholders, local residents, and Canadians from every corner of the country who all share a deep connection to the future of this remarkable place. Today’s announcement marks a crucial step towards a concept design — one that will not only honor the heritage of Canada’s first national park but also invite the world to experience the natural beauty and timeless wonder of this cherished destination.”
