A new severe storm has brought major travel disruptions to South Korea’s Jeju Airport, forcing the cancellation of over fifty flights operated by Korean Air, Air Seoul, Asiana, and Air Busan. Strong winds and heavy snowfall have made takeoffs and landings nearly impossible, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Authorities have issued wind and blizzard warnings, while airlines continue to monitor the situation, with more cancellations expected if conditions worsen. Travelers planning to fly to or from Jeju are advised to check for real-time updates and make alternative arrangements as the storm continues to impact operations.

Major Flight Cancellations and Delays

According to Korea Airport Service, as of 1 p.m. on February 7, a total of 51 domestic flights departing from Jeju to other regions were canceled. Additionally, six international flights—both departures and arrivals—were also grounded due to the severe weather conditions.

Jeju Island remains under a wind warning and rapid wind warning, with intermittent blizzards making takeoffs nearly impossible. Korean Air took a significant hit, canceling all 23 flights scheduled to depart from Jeju between 10 a.m. and 6:35 p.m. The airline also warned that additional cancellations after 6 p.m. were highly likely.

At Jeju Airport, 187 domestic departures and arrivals were scheduled for the day. However, only 39 domestic flights have managed to depart, while 40 have successfully arrived.

Thousands Stranded as Authorities Activate Emergency Measures

The extreme weather conditions have left approximately 15,000 travelers stranded in Jeju. In response, local authorities and airport services have activated an ‘alert’ level response, mobilizing emergency teams to provide support for affected passengers.

Airlines Heavily Impacted by Weather Chaos

The latest data from Jeju International Airport shows a total of 56 cancellations and 61 delays today. Among the airlines most affected:

  • Korean Air: 26 flights canceled (32%), 7 flights delayed (8%)
  • Jin Air: 11 flights canceled (18%), 8 flights delayed (13%)
  • Eastar Jet: 10 flights canceled (27%), 7 flights delayed (19%)
  • Spring Airlines: 8 flights canceled (50%), no delays
  • Air Seoul: 1 flight canceled (12%), 1 flight delayed (12%)
  • Jeju Air: No cancellations, but 9 flights delayed (15%)
  • Asiana Airlines: No cancellations, 3 flights delayed (5%)
  • Tway Air: No cancellations, but 22 flights delayed (28%)
  • Air Busan: No cancellations, 4 flights delayed (18%)

Adverse Weather Conditions Extend Beyond Jeju

The disruption isn’t limited to Jeju alone. Heavy snowfall at other regional airports has further compounded the issue, affecting incoming and outgoing flights to and from Jeju.

With strong wind and wind shear advisories still in effect, travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updates before heading to the airport. Airport officials are closely monitoring the situation as they work to manage stranded passengers and resume operations as soon as conditions allow.
