After being out of service since 25 September 2024 due to a detected fault, the ElecLink electricity interconnector between France and the UK is now set to gradually resume operations. With restoration work successfully completed, ElecLink has entered the final phase of assessment and system testing, paving the way for a phased return starting 5 February 2025.

Final Testing & Service Restoration Timeline

During the final verification stage, which will run from 5 to 10 February 2025, ElecLink will perform a series of system integrity checks to ensure operational stability. These tests may result in short, temporary disruptions, but they are necessary to complete the full return-to-service process.

To facilitate energy trading during this period, ElecLink will make its capacity available through day-ahead and intraday auctions, allowing market participants to engage in electricity exchange as the interconnector progressively comes back online.

Financial Implications & Revenue Forecast

The temporary shutdown in early 2025 is projected to have an estimated financial impact of €25 million. Despite this, as of 31 December 2024, the company has already secured €168 million in revenue for 2025, contingent upon the successful reactivation of the interconnector from 5 February 2025.

Strengthening Energy Security for France & the UK

With a 1GW electricity transfer capacity, ElecLink plays a crucial role in maintaining a stable and efficient energy network between France and the UK. The interconnector enhances energy security, optimizes market supply, and supports the region’s power grid stability.

As ElecLink prepares to resume full functionality, it will reinforce its position as a key infrastructure asset, ensuring a reliable and seamless exchange of electricity between the two nations.
