Indian Railways plans to launch 200 new Vande Bharat trains in 3 years, enhancing connectivity and modernizing travel with faster, more efficient rail services.

Indian Railways to Roll Out 350 New Trains, Expand Infrastructure and Electrification

Following the 2025 Budget announcement, Indian Railways has outlined an ambitious plan to manufacture 350 new trains over the next two to three years. The production schedule includes 100 Amrit Bharat, 50 Namo Bharat, and 200 Vande Bharat trains, covering both sleeper and chair car configurations. These additions aim to enhance nationwide connectivity and modernize passenger services.

Expansion of Non-AC Coaches to Meet Growing Demand

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also announced plans to produce 17,500 Non-AC General and Sleeper Coaches to accommodate the increasing passenger load. This initiative is expected to improve accessibility for budget travelers and reduce congestion across the rail network. The manufacturing strategy follows a 2:3 ratio for non-AC coaches and a 1:3 ratio for AC coaches, ensuring a balanced fleet expansion. A dedicated production program has been launched to expedite the availability of general coaches across the country.

Major Infrastructure Developments Underway

With a budget allocation of ₹2.52 lakh crore for 2025-26, the government continues its focus on rail infrastructure development. Vaishnaw announced the initiation of new projects worth ₹4.6 lakh crore, set to be completed within the next four to five years. These projects include new railway lines, station upgrades, flyover construction, and underpass development to streamline travel and improve safety.

Production of general coaches is already in progress, with 1,400 units expected to be ready by March 31. The target for the upcoming financial year is set at 2,000 new general coaches. Additionally, approval has been granted for the construction of 1,000 new flyovers to ease congestion on the network.

100% Electrification and Record Cargo Capacity

Indian Railways is on track to achieve complete electrification by the end of this financial year, marking a significant step toward sustainability. Investment in rail safety has also been increased, with funding rising from ₹1.08 lakh crore to ₹1.14 lakh crore this year and a further boost to ₹1.16 lakh crore in the next financial year.

Additionally, Indian Railways is set to achieve a record-breaking cargo capacity of 1.6 billion tonnes by March 31, making it the world’s second-largest cargo railway system after China. These developments highlight the government’s commitment to modernizing railway operations while improving efficiency and safety.
