Air India

Air India is transforming India’s aviation industry by investing in advanced training facilities, pilot development, and cutting-edge maintenance to shape the future workforce.

As India’s aviation industry continues its rapid expansion, there is a growing demand for skilled professionals who can meet the challenges of this dynamic sector. Air India, with its vision of fostering talent and supporting the industry’s growth, is making substantial investments in developing the workforce of tomorrow. Let’s explore how Air India is driving this transformation through its strategic initiatives.

1. Transforming Aviation Training with the Air India Training Academy

Spanning an impressive 600,000 square feet, the Air India Training Academy in Gurugram stands as the largest aviation training institution in South Asia. This world-class facility is set to train over 50,000 Air India professionals in various domains, including pilots, cabin crew, engineers, and security personnel, over the next few years. Combining immersive classroom instruction with hands-on practical training, the academy ensures that its graduates are industry-ready.

In addition to its existing facilities, Air India is expanding its offerings by establishing more than 20 Full Flight Simulator (FFS) bays. These simulators will support the airline’s growing fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, preparing crews for new aircraft deliveries and reinforcing its commitment to operational readiness.

2. Cultivating Future Pilots at the Flying Training Organisation (FTO)

To meet the escalating demand for skilled pilots, Air India is launching the Flying Training Organisation (FTO) in Amravati, located at the Maharashtra Airport Development Company’s airport. This state-of-the-art flying school, which will be the largest in South Asia, aims to produce 180 commercial pilots annually. In doing so, it will not only bolster Air India’s pilot pool but also contribute significantly to the broader aviation landscape in India.

The FTO will feature cutting-edge, digitally-enabled classrooms and modern hostels, ensuring a conducive learning environment for aspiring aviators. Additionally, Air India has placed an order for 34 trainer aircraft, including single-engine planes from Piper Aircraft (USA) and twin-engine aircraft from Diamond Aircraft (Austria). These planes will be essential for training cadet pilots once the FTO becomes operational in the first quarter of financial year 2026.

3. Empowering Fleet Maintenance with a Mega MRO Facility in Bengaluru

Recognising the importance of robust Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services, Air India is building a state-of-the-art MRO facility in Bengaluru. This massive 11-bay facility, slated to open in 2026, will not only enhance Air India’s fleet maintenance capabilities but will also support the aviation ecosystem in India by generating numerous employment opportunities for engineers.

Equipped with the latest in aircraft maintenance technology, the MRO facility will feature a massive hangar designed to accommodate both wide-body and narrow-body aircraft for base maintenance, streamlining operations and ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability.

4. Building Engineering Expertise with the Basic Maintenance Training Organisation (BMTO)

In a bid to further strengthen its engineering capabilities, Air India is setting up a Basic Maintenance Training Organisation (BMTO) in Bengaluru. This organisation will provide a comprehensive Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programme, certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The BMTO’s proximity to Bengaluru International Airport will allow students to gain valuable hands-on experience as part of their training.

Expected to be operational by mid-2026, the BMTO will play a pivotal role in developing the next generation of aircraft maintenance engineers. In the interim, Air India will implement a Cadet Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) programme in collaboration with other leading institutions in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Shaping India’s Aviation Future

Through its extensive training and development initiatives, Air India is setting the stage for the future of aviation in India. By investing in cutting-edge infrastructure, offering comprehensive training programs, and nurturing talent across a range of aviation disciplines, Air India is not only enhancing its own operations but also contributing to the broader growth of India’s aviation industry. As the sector continues to evolve, Air India’s commitment to skill development will be a key driver of its ongoing success and the future of Indian aviation.
