Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport is set to expand its global reach in 2025, with plans for new direct flights to North America, India, and Southeast Asia.

Speaking at the 32nd Tourism Season Opening Gala, CEO Francois Berisot outlined record-breaking passenger growth and future infrastructure developments, positioning Budapest as a key aviation hub in Central and Eastern Europe.

According to Hungary’s Ministry of Transport, Budapest Airport’s expansion aligns with Hungary’s National Tourism Development Strategy 2030, aiming to increase inbound tourism and improve international air connectivity.

Record Growth in Passenger and Cargo Traffic

In 2024, Budapest Airport achieved its highest-ever passenger traffic, handling 17.6 million travelers, a 20% increase from 2023.

The airport also exceeded its pre-pandemic record of 16.2 million passengers (2019) by 8.7%, highlighting Hungary’s growing appeal as a European travel destination.

Other key achievements in 2024 included:

  • 48.8% growth in air cargo, reaching 300,000 tons.
  • 43 airlines offering flights to 142 destinations, with London, Istanbul, Milan, and Paris being the most popular routes.
  • Rapid growth in Chinese tourism, with direct flights to seven Chinese cities, including Guangzhou, Xi’an, and Shenzhen.

Budapest now boasts the largest seat capacity to China in Eastern and Central Europe, reflecting strengthened economic and tourism ties between Hungary and China.

New Flight Routes in 2025

Budapest Airport’s expansion continues in 2025, with new flights launching to key global destinations. Confirmed routes include:

  • Europe:
    • SAS launching flights to Copenhagen.
    • EasyJet adding routes to Bordeaux and Nantes (France).
  • Middle East:
    • Jazeera Airways launching direct Kuwait City-Budapest flights in June.
    • Budapest will now connect to eight Middle Eastern destinations: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh, Jeddah, Amman, Tel Aviv, and Kuwait City.

These new connections will enhance business, tourism, and cultural exchanges, further boosting Hungary’s economy and international visibility.

Airport Expansion and Terminal 3 Construction

With Budapest Airport expected to handle 20 million passengers annually by 2030, long-term development plans are underway.

The Hungarian government and VINCI Airports, which operates Budapest Airport, have begun planning Terminal 3, ensuring high-quality services and infrastructure expansion.

The Hungarian Ministry of Economy supports these investments, recognizing the airport’s key role in Hungary’s GDP growth.

The project will be implemented in phases, accommodating future passenger demand and increased international connectivity.

Hungary is actively working to strengthen its global tourism and aviation industry:

  • Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy announced the creation of a tourism bank and a hotel support program to stimulate the hospitality sector.
  • Visit Hungary CEO Olivér Csendes confirmed plans to reorganize the Tourism Summit and launch the Budapest MICE Fund to boost business tourism.
