Shillong, Silchar, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, and East Jaintia Hills to benefit as Centre approves 160-km high-speed corridor.

The central government is expected to grant approval for the construction of a 160-km greenfield high-speed corridor linking Shillong and Silchar.

This four-lane infrastructure initiative, first envisioned in 2017 under the Bharatmala project by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, is set to become one of the most significant developments in Northeast India. It will enhance connectivity among Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura while playing a crucial role in expediting the movement of defence personnel in the region.

Designed as an alternative to the deteriorating NH-6, the proposed corridor will address the long-standing issue of poor road conditions, particularly in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district.

Additionally, the Shillong-Silchar expressway is expected to spur economic activity, providing relief to travelers frequently facing disruptions due to landslides and road damage, especially in the Ratacherra stretch during monsoons. With improved accessibility, the project aims to streamline transportation and trade routes across multiple Northeastern states.
