Adora Cruises recently unveiled the second edition of its “Thinking of Dunhuang: Digital Dunhuang Enters Adora Cruises” maritime art exhibition aboard its first domestically-built large cruise ship, Adora Magic City. This immersive showcase highlights the rich cultural heritage of Dunhuang through its unique focus on costume culture and carefully curated murals.
The exhibition presents 11 meticulously selected murals and one statue, offering an in-depth exploration of Dunhuang’s evolving clothing styles and makeup artistry across different historical periods. Early pieces, such as the Northern Liang mural Offering to Bodhisattva, depict Bodhisattvas adorned in traditional Indian-inspired attire. The Western Wei mural Five Hundred Robbers Becoming Buddhas features intricate details of ancient cavalry uniforms in a grand and dynamic composition. Representing the Tang Dynasty, The Lady of the Governor Worshiping Buddha showcases the opulence and sophistication of Tang-era fashion, reflecting the prosperity of the time. Murals from later periods, including the Song, Western Xia, and Yuan dynasties, illustrate the diverse clothing styles of emperors, generals, noblewomen, and commoners, capturing the essence of cultural fusion during these eras.
Starting February 1, Adora Cruises will enhance the experience with interactive activities centered on Dunhuang’s costume culture. Guests can enjoy screenings of Dunhuang documentaries, traditional mural-inspired dances, and hands-on experiences with Silk Road Apsaras costumes and makeup. For younger travelers, the “Little Shazhou Apsaras Experience” provides an engaging opportunity to explore the charm of Dunhuang art in a fun and educational way. These activities aim to immerse visitors in the vibrant and multifaceted world of Dunhuang’s cultural legacy.
AIDA Cruises said, “We are very pleased to deepen our cooperation with the Dunhuang Academy and continue the spirit of the Silk Road through the cruise ship. The first Dunhuang-themed art exhibition was widely praised. In the second exhibition, we provide more experiential activities to bring guests a more immersive maritime cultural journey.”
The Dunhuang Academy said, “We are very honored to present the Dunhuang-themed art exhibition on AIDA Magic City again, which will have a far-reaching impact on promoting Dunhuang culture and promoting cultural exchanges. At the same time, we look forward to continuous cooperation with AIDA Cruises, hoping that through innovative cultural experiences, more people will be able to have a deeper understanding of Dunhuang culture, and open up new ways for the international dissemination of Dunhuang culture.”
Currently, Aida Cruises operates two major cruise ships: the first domestically-built large vessel, Aida Magic City, and the renowned “art ship,” Aida Mediterranean. Together, these ships have welcomed nearly 500,000 guests from both domestic and international markets. Meanwhile, the construction of the second domestically-built large cruise ship, Aida Flower City, has been fully completed. This ship is slated for delivery by the end of 2026 and will launch international routes departing from Guangzhou Nansha.
