Qantas dominates Australian skies with 76.1% on-time departures in 2024, marking five consecutive years as the most punctual domestic airline.
Qantas has once again demonstrated its operational excellence, finishing 2024 as the most punctual major domestic airline in Australia. According to the latest government data, 76.1% of Qantas flights (including QantasLink) departed on time last year, surpassing its nearest competitor, which recorded an on-time departure rate of 73.7%.
This achievement marks five consecutive years of Qantas leading the domestic punctuality rankings, showing consistent improvements over recent years. The airline’s performance in 2024 is an increase from 74.1% in 2023 and a notable jump from 69.2% in 2022.
Over the course of the year, Qantas outperformed its main rival in 10 of the 12 months, underscoring its commitment to reliability. The carrier’s annual cancellation rate also improved, dropping to 3.2% in 2024 from 3.5% in 2023.
Even during the peak festive travel season, Qantas maintained strong operational metrics. December saw 73.1% of its flights departing on time, an improvement of 4.9 percentage points from November and 3.6 percentage points from December 2023. Despite these gains, December’s on-time performance trailed its competitor by 1.3 percentage points. Cancellation rates for the month were reduced to 2.7%, down from November’s 3.4%.
These results highlight Qantas’ continued focus on operational efficiency and customer satisfaction, reinforcing its position as a leader in domestic aviation.
Comments from Qantas Domestic CEO Markus Svensson:
“We know just how important it is for our customers to get to their destination on time and we’ve seen really positive improvements off the back of the work our teams have been doing over the past twelve months.
“We are pleased that we continued to see year-on-year improvement in our operational performance but there is still more work to do as it’s still not back at the levels that we are targeting.
“We are investing a lot in areas like engineering and efficient boarding processes to further improve our reliability and are working with the broader aviation sector on how we can lift the performance of the industry as a whole.”
