Opera Australia has revealed that Angelina Thomson will take on the role of Miss Adelaide in the new production of the acclaimed Broadway musical Guys & Dolls, set to debut at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour on March 21.
Following a thorough search across the country to identify a performer with the necessary vocal talent, dance skills, and comedic ability for the part, Director Shaun Rennie is eager to commence rehearsals now that his cast is finalized.
“Miss Adelaide requires a fantastic voice to sing iconic songs like “Adelaide’s Lament” and “Take Back Your Mink”, she also needs to dance, be incredibly charismatic, and have enormous heart. Audiences need to fall in love with Adelaide and I know Angelina has all the qualities we’ve been looking for,” Rennie said.
“Angelina will be joining a fantastically talented cast of Australian performers as well as a superb ensemble that showcases some of the best singers and dancers in the country,” Rennie added.
Angelina, beloved by her fans for her role as Kirby in Home & Away, has previously graced the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour stage as part of the ensemble for West Side Story in 2019. This upcoming performance marks her first lead role on this renowned floating stage.
“Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is without a doubt one of my favourite events of the year. To return to the stage in a leading role at this iconic Sydney venue is a pinch-me moment!” Thomson said.
She will be joining a cast that includes Cody Simpson, Annie Aitken, Bobby Fox, and Jason Arrow. This production is the first musical comedy to be staged at this waterfront venue and represents the first major Australian revival of Guys & Dolls in ten years.
Promising an evening filled with entertainment, stellar vocals, and memorable dance performances such as ‘Luck Be a Lady’ and ‘Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat,’ the show features a set that recreates an expansive vision of New York City, designed by Brian Thomson with costumes by Jennifer Irwin.
With music by Frank Loesser and a script by Joe Swerling and Abe Burrows, Guys & Dolls has been celebrated as one of the greatest musicals of all time, achieving tremendous success since its Broadway premiere in 1950. It has garnered five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was adapted into a hit Hollywood film in 1955 with stars Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, and has had a highly successful recent revival in the West End.
Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour benefits from the support of the NSW Government through Destination NSW, and the International Foundation for Arts and Culture, with Dr Haruhisa Handa OA as the Patron in Chief, and HSBC as the Principal Partner.
