The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings affecting approximately 70 million people across the US, from the Northern Plains to New England and into the southern states.

These warnings come as a powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snow, frigid temperatures, and dangerously low wind chills to a large portion of the country.

Snowfall and Warnings in the Northeast

The NWS forecasts up to 10 inches (25 cm) of snow in parts of New England, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, starting Sunday afternoon and continuing into Monday.

Major cities such as Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia are expected to receive several inches of snow.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has urged residents to use public transportation to allow snowplows to clear streets efficiently. Warming centers have been opened, and residents facing heating or utility issues are encouraged to call 311 for assistance.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for all 21 counties in the state, with 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) of snow expected in the northern region. Municipalities across the state have activated emergency plans, with warming shelters available for residents in need.

Arctic Blast and Subzero Temperatures

Behind the storm, an Arctic blast is expected to plunge temperatures across much of the Eastern U.S. early next week. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that wind chills as low as -55°F (-48°C) are already being recorded in parts of the Northern Plains, including North Dakota and Minnesota. Subzero wind chills are forecast to extend as far south as Oklahoma, Louisiana, and parts of the Carolinas.

The disruption in the polar vortex, typically confined to the North Pole, has caused this unusual cold snap. The Central and Eastern U.S. will experience highs in the teens and 20s°F (-7 to -1°C), with lows in the single digits or below zero through Tuesday.

Unusual Wintry Conditions in the South

Southern states, including Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, are bracing for a rare wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency and urged residents to prepare for hazardous road conditions and potential power outages.

The Gulf Coast and Southeast are expected to see freezing rain and snowfall starting Monday night, particularly along the Interstate 20 and Interstate 10 corridors. The storm may bring heavy snow to northern Louisiana and parts of Mississippi and a mix of sleet and ice to areas from Houston to Mobile, Alabama.

Safety Measures and Resources

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and state emergency management offices are coordinating responses to ensure public safety. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates via official platforms.
