Turkey's tourism
attracting travelers

Turkey’s tourism declines with rising costs, while Georgia thrives as a top destination, attracting travelers with affordability and modern infrastructure.

Turkey has faced a notable decline in tourism over recent years, with visitors voicing concerns about skyrocketing prices. Meanwhile, a neighboring country, Georgia, has been gaining traction as an emerging tourist hotspot, sparking conversations about its growing popularity.

Georgia, bordered by Russia and Azerbaijan, has implemented various strategies to attract visitors. These include enhancing public transport, upgrading cruise ports, and improving international signage. This proactive approach comes as Turkey, once known for its affordability, grapples with the impact of rising costs on its tourism industry.

Online discussions on platforms like Reddit have highlighted Georgia’s appeal, with travelers praising it as a top-tier destination. One tourist shared their recent family trip experience in Tbilisi, offering advice on safety, travel, and local attractions. The post quickly gained traction, with many commenters expressing their admiration for the country, calling it a must-visit destination.

On the other hand, Turkey’s tourism challenges have been linked to economic factors. Sarah Donaldson, a senior travel claims analyst at Fast Cover Travel Insurance, attributed the decline to hyperinflation, making accommodation and dining unaffordable even for foreign visitors. Turkey’s inflation rate, which peaked at 75% in May 2024, had dropped to 44% by December. Experts are hopeful this will lead to a recovery in tourism, although some travelers remain hesitant to return.

As Turkey works to reclaim its status as a budget-friendly destination, Georgia continues to thrive. Over the past 25 years, the country has invested in modern, accessible infrastructure, including disability-friendly bus systems, a major shipping port in Batumi, and inclusive access to museums, parks, and train stations.

Tour guide Tariel Tabashidze, based in Tbilisi, noted that Georgia’s tourism growth had previously stalled due to political unrest and the ongoing effects of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. However, with peace in the region, experts predict the industry will reach unprecedented heights. Georgia’s efforts to solidify its place on the global tourism map may further challenge Turkey’s position as a go-to destination.
