Thailand experiences a rare cold wave as a high-pressure system from China brings chilly mornings, dense fog, and unseasonably cool temperatures nationwide.

Thailand is currently experiencing an unexpected cold spell, with a powerful high-pressure system from China bringing an unusual chill to the region. This rare weather event, reminiscent of a polar vortex, has significantly altered the country’s typical climate patterns, resulting in lower-than-average temperatures.

The Thai Meteorological Department reports that cool-to-cold conditions are likely to persist in various parts of the country until mid-February. While the high-pressure system is expected to weaken and retreat between January 19 and 27, the lingering effects of the cold wave are expected to continue.

On January 13, Sakon Nakhon recorded an exceptionally low temperature of 6.6°C, one of the coldest in Thailand. Bangkok’s Bang Na district also experienced an unusual chill, with temperatures dropping to 15.2°C, far below the city’s normal range of 23-33°C for this period.

From January 14-15, 2025, cold mornings and fog are forecasted to dominate northern, northeastern, and central Thailand. In Bangkok and neighboring areas, residents can expect cool mornings, while the eastern and upper southern regions brace for similar conditions. Additionally, the approaching northeast monsoon is predicted to bring isolated heavy rain and waves reaching up to two meters in southern coastal areas.

The department also projects an early start to the rainy season, influenced by the La Niña weather phenomenon. However, rainfall is expected to be less intense compared to the downpours that struck Thailand in June 2024. From February to May 2025, La Niña is anticipated to bring southern and southeastern wind gusts, increasing humidity and the likelihood of thunderstorms. Despite this, Thailand’s peak temperatures in March and April are expected to remain lower than in recent years, thanks to the cooler weather patterns induced by La Niña.
