The Folk Music Festival in Thailand celebrated cultural unity, showcasing the Himalayan region’s vibrant heritage with captivating and mesmerizing performances.

Aiming to preserve and celebrate the rich traditions of the Himalayan region, the Warnamala Paribar and the Association for Conservation & Tourism (ACT) hosted a three-day Himalayan Folk Music Festival in Siliguri.

This vibrant event brought together artists and ethnic communities from the Himalayan foothills, offering a platform to highlight the region’s unique folk music traditions. Performers from various communities, including the Toto, Limbu, Dhimal, Chamba, and Haryana, showcased their traditional music, captivating audiences with their soulful melodies.

Adorned in their distinctive traditional attire, the artists enriched the atmosphere with the sounds of their heritage, reflecting the diverse cultural essence of the Himalayas. The festival also welcomed international participants, who joined Indian folk musicians in creating memorable performances. These global contributors, long advocates of India’s cultural preservation, played musical instruments in harmony with the local artists.

The festival’s primary goal was to inspire India’s youth to reconnect with their roots by fostering an appreciation for folk music in native languages. These languages, steeped in history and wisdom, are at risk of being lost amidst globalization and Western influences. The organizers emphasized the urgency of preserving this intangible cultural heritage for future generations.

Renowned musical artist Matt Keegan from Sydney, Australia, praised the festival’s efforts during an interaction with ANI. A special highlight of the event was the recognition of Soni Toto, a talented artist from the Toto community, a small tribal group based in Totopara with a population of just 1,640.

Soni Toto, who recently secured first place in the World Folkathon competition organized by the festival group, expressed immense pride in his community’s cultural wealth. He urged the younger generation to take up the mantle of preserving their heritage for years to come. (ANI)
