Japan Airlines aims to strengthen its presence in Vietnam, targeting market growth through expanded services and fostering tourism, economic, and cultural ties.
At an event held last weekend to commemorate 30 years of the Ho Chi Minh City-Japan air route, Takahiro Miyagi, managing director of Japan Airlines’ regional sales office in Vietnam, highlighted the airline’s journey since its inaugural flight from Osaka to Ho Chi Minh City on November 16, 1994. Over the years, Japan Airlines has served as a vital link fostering economic, cultural, and tourism exchanges between Vietnam and Japan.
In 2019, the airline achieved a record-breaking passenger count, driven by the expansion of its flight network to 199 destinations across 66 countries and territories, alongside enhanced services.
By 2023, Japan Airlines had rebounded strongly from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, recording passenger numbers that reached 135% of pre-pandemic levels.
Currently, the airline operates two daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City and one from Hanoi to Japan. Aviation analytics firm Cirium has ranked it as the second most on-time airline in the Asia-Pacific region.
Between January and August this year, over 461,000 Japanese visitors arrived in Vietnam, representing 79% of the total recorded in 2023. However, the weakening Japanese yen has led to a decline in overseas travel by Japanese tourists, affecting tourism numbers to Vietnam.
Despite this, Japan remains one of Vietnam’s top 10 tourism markets, as confirmed by the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
