UNESCO names Abo Noghta Castles in Tabab a top tourism village, highlighting its rich heritage and cultural significance.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recently added the Abo Noghta Castles in Tabab, a historical town in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia, to its prestigious list of the Best Tourism Villages of 2024.
The announcement was made during a ceremony in Cartagena, Colombia, which was attended by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al-Khateeb.
Al-Khateeb shared his enthusiasm over Abo Noghta Castles’ inclusion on this distinguished global list, noting that such recognition underscores the rich historical and cultural tapestry of Saudi Arabia’s various locales.
Situated in Tabab within the Asir province, the Abo Noghta Castles stand as a significant historical beacon in the area. These fortifications are comprised of multiple edifices constructed from native stone, featuring distinctive architectural elements that showcase true Asiri traditions.
The castles, adorned with white marble around windows and corners, are perched above the verdant Tabab Valley, providing stunning views of the natural landscape below.
Tabab itself is steeped in a wealth of historical and cultural stories, boasting a collection of ancient forts, palaces, and mosques that date back centuries, establishing it as a key cultural and tourist hub with ample amenities for visitors.
About 25 kilometers northwest of Abha and elevated at 2,400 meters above sea level, Tabab is nestled among renowned valleys such as Wadi Tabab, Wadi Al-Maghouth, and Wadi Dabuoi. These areas are celebrated for their fertile lands and seasonal agriculture.
Furthermore, the town features additional historic attractions like forts and palaces scattered throughout neighboring villages including Al-Hadhen, Zeena, and Al-Ghal.
