Brussels Airport saw a 5% rise in passenger traffic in October 2024, with over 2.1 million travelers, driven by the autumn breaks and a boost in cargo volumes.
In October, Brussels Airport saw more than 2.1 million passengers, marking a 5% increase compared to the same month in 2023. The boost in passenger traffic was primarily driven by the autumn mid-term breaks, which brought higher numbers during the latter half of the month. However, the national security sector strike on October 1st negatively impacted passenger flow, particularly for departing flights. On the cargo front, overall volumes rose by 1% year-on-year.
Passenger Traffic: A 5% Increase Over October 2023
Brussels Airport recorded 2,105,930 passengers in October, reflecting a 5% growth from the previous year. The two-week autumn break for French-speaking schools and the start of the Dutch-speaking schools’ autumn holidays contributed to a surge in passengers toward the end of the month. In contrast, the national security action on October 1st had a detrimental effect on travel, particularly on outbound flights.
Transfer passengers made up 14% of the total departing passengers, highlighting Brussels Airport’s role as a key transfer hub, particularly for Star Alliance carriers.
The top ten countries for outbound travel in October were Spain, Italy, Germany, Türkiye, Morocco, Portugal, Greece, the United States, France, and Switzerland.
Aircraft Movements: A 2% Year-on-Year Increase
October saw a 2% rise in aircraft movements compared to the same month in 2023. Passenger flights increased by 1%, while cargo flights saw a notable 12% boost. The average number of passengers per flight rose to 147, up by five compared to last year, due to the deployment of larger aircraft and a higher load factor on flights.
