India is set to welcome a surge of international travelers with a new initiative aimed at boosting tourism. Speaking at a World Tourism Day event, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, India’s Minister of Tourism, announced that 100,000 foreign tourists will soon be exempt from paying visa fees. While it’s not yet confirmed whether the exemption will apply to the electronic visa (e-Visa) or consular visa, more details are expected to be released soon, offering further clarity on the process.

This initiative mirrors a previous measure from 2021 to 2022, when India offered 500,000 free visas to foreign tourists in an effort to revive its tourism industry, which had been severely impacted by the global pandemic. The response to that initiative was overwhelmingly positive, and it played a crucial role in rebuilding traveler confidence while injecting much-needed energy into India’s tourism ecosystem. Hotels, airlines, tour operators, and local businesses all benefited from the influx of visitors, demonstrating the far-reaching effects of a thriving tourism sector.

The primary goal, then as now, is to rejuvenate India’s tourism industry while reassuring international visitors that the country remains a safe, vibrant, and welcoming destination. The 2021 initiative’s success highlighted India’s commitment to positioning itself as a top travel destination, despite global challenges.

As part of this renewed focus on tourism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged the Indian diaspora to invite their non-Indian friends to visit the country. The Ministry of Tourism responded by launching the “Chalo India” initiative, which turns members of the diaspora into unofficial ambassadors for Incredible India, promoting its rich cultural and natural heritage.

Alongside the visa fee exemptions, the government is also planning targeted campaigns and collaborations with airlines and tour operators to make travel to India even more attractive and accessible. These combined efforts are expected to significantly boost tourism, contribute to the broader economy, and reinforce India’s standing as one of the world’s most diverse and captivating destinations.
