H.I.S. Co., Ltd., the parent company of Hawaii HIS Corporation, has successfully renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hawaii Tourism Japan to continue its commitment to responsible tourism under the banner of “Mālama Hawai‘i.” In alignment with this renewed MoU, Hawaii HIS Corporation is set to inaugurate a “Mālama Station” at the LeaLea Lounge to enhance regenerative tourism efforts.
The original MoU, signed in September 2022 between HIS and HTJ, focused on promoting “Mālama Hawai‘i” to preserve natural and cultural resources while fostering a sustainable community alongside tourists. Activities under this initiative have included educational programming for staff and collaborative events with The Genki Ala Wai Project—an NPO dedicated to improving Ala Wai Canal’s water quality—such as the dispersal of 3,000 mud balls to decompose sludge.
Launching of Mālama Station
The new “Mālama Station” will be established on November 1 at the LeaLea Lounge, Hawaii’s first HTJ-certified satellite office. The station will serve as an educational hub where tourists can engage with local conservation and cultural preservation efforts. From November 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, the following four campaigns will be launched to encourage visitors to participate actively in “Mālama Hawai‘i”:
Beach Clean Kit Loan: Tourists can borrow kits to collect harmful microplastics from the beaches at no charge. Those who return microplastics to the Mālama Station will receive a free day pass on the LeaLea Trolley, with existing pass holders receiving a special “Mālama Hawai‘i” gift.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Pump bottles of locally produced, reef-safe sunscreen will be available at the station, supporting both tourists and local businesses.
Discounts on Eco-Friendly Tours: Discounts will be offered on partner-led dolphin and sea turtle watching, as well as beach kayak tours. Participants will also receive an educational picture book on environmental conservation, with 5% of tour sales being reinvested into supporting local tour operators.
Waikiki Walk with Aloha Discount: A 50% discount will be available on the new “Waikiki Walk with Aloha” tour for those who present eco-friendly, non-plastic items like reusable shopping bags or water bottles.
Mālama Station Information:
Hours of Operation: 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM daily
Location: 2201 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu, Royal Hawaiian Center, Building B, Level 3
