On the 24th of September, the Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB) alongside Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) conducted two pivotal events that showcased their ongoing commitment to deepen tourism connections with China. These efforts represent a crucial phase in Azerbaijan’s strategy to build stronger relationships within the Chinese travel market.
In Beijing, a press event attracted around 30 journalists from leading media houses, where updates were shared on Azerbaijan’s evolving tourism scene. Noteworthy points discussed included the new visa exemption for Chinese visitors, the functions of the ATB’s office in China, and the direct Baku-Beijing flights provided by AZAL. The visa exemption, in place from July 20, 2024, to July 20, 2025, permits Chinese tourists to enter Azerbaijan three times a year. AZAL emphasizes a seamless, safe, and efficient journey on this direct route, which is vital for expanding Azerbaijan’s international connections.
Moreover, a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Azerbaijan Airlines, the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, and Trip.com Group, a premier online travel agency. This MoU is set to enhance tourism collaboration by using Ctrip’s robust platforms to position Azerbaijan as an ideal destination for Chinese tourists. At the event, Florian Sengstschmid, CEO of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, highlighted the importance of this partnership, remarking, “Tourism ties between Azerbaijan and China have escalated to a new level, bolstered by the fresh surge of visitors and tailored experiences, further cemented by today’s MoU with Trip.com Group which solidifies our presence in the Chinese market.”
“Starting in December 2023, Azerbaijan Airlines began operating direct flights between Baku and Beijing, connecting our two capitals twice a week. This new route creates an essential “air bridge” between our nations, symbolizing more than just a flight connection—it’s a bridge between our cultures, economies, and peoples,” said Jamil Manizade, Chief Commercial Officer at Azerbaijan Airlines.
These efforts are integral to a wider strategy aimed at enhancing Azerbaijan’s tourism sector’s visibility and attractiveness to Chinese tourists. The day also featured a VIP networking dinner with 100 notable figures, including Rashad Nabiyev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Digital Development and Transportation, Bunyad Huseynov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to China, along with other significant attendees from the airline, embassy, travel, and media sectors.
Additionally, the 24th of September marked the culmination of ATB’s roadshow across four major Chinese cities—Shenzhen, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Beijing—held from September 18-24, 2024. This roadshow facilitated direct engagements between Azerbaijani tourism entities and over 300 travel agencies, airlines, and hospitality groups, showcasing Azerbaijan’s premier attractions.
From January to August 2024, Azerbaijan recorded an unprecedented influx of 26,866 Chinese tourists, more than doubling the previous year’s figures. This spike is largely due to the year-long visa exemption, increased direct flights, and focused marketing efforts aimed at both trade and consumers. Azerbaijan continues to attract Chinese visitors with its blend of UNESCO sites, high-end shopping, and wellness options, enhanced by the tailored offerings of the China Ready Program, ensuring every visitor’s needs are meticulously met.
