The cross-border tourism train, StarExpress, embarked on its maiden voyage on Tuesday, departing from Kunming, the capital of Southwest China’s Yunnan province. This new train route connects China and Laos, offering a unique travel experience that promotes cultural and tourism exchanges between the two countries.

Developed by CTG Asset, a subsidiary of China Tourism Group, the StarExpress project is a part of the Belt and Road Initiative, aiming to foster stronger ties and enhance the tourism infrastructure between China and Laos. The train journey begins in Kunming, crosses the Tropic of Cancer, passes through the UNESCO World Heritage site of Luang Prabang, and reaches Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

During the inaugural three-night, four-day tour, passengers are treated to stunning landscapes, rich cultural experiences, and opportunities to explore the ethnic diversity along the way. Highlights of the trip include exploring the natural beauty of Xishuangbanna and the spiritual sites of Luang Prabang.

The company plans to introduce a more extended six-night, seven-day tour package after the National Day holiday to further enhance the travel experience.

Designed with environmental sustainability and safety in mind, the StarExpress train boasts cutting-edge soundproofing technology and an integrated smart operating system. Travelers can also enjoy on-demand entertainment options, including movies and interactive games, ensuring a comfortable and engaging journey.

According to an official from CTG Asset, the launch of StarExpress represents a major step forward for China’s tourism train industry and highlights efforts to strengthen tourism cooperation between China and Laos. The train service also supports the development of tourism along the China-Laos railway, offering an exciting new way to experience the cultural richness of both countries.
