The Group of 20 (G20), as the primary forum for cooperation among the world’s major economies, plays a crucial role in global governance, fostering collaboration to tackle significant global challenges. A key part of this is the G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meeting, which brings together tourism ministers from G20 nations and other leading countries.

The Honourable Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, recently concluded Canada’s successful participation in the 2024 G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in Belém, Brazil.

The G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meeting provides a platform for nations to share best practices, strengthen international partnerships, and leverage tourism as a driver for economic growth and cultural exchange. This year, climate change took center stage, with Minister Ferrada addressing Canada’s concerns on the impact of wildfires and warming winters as existential threats to the tourism industry. She also engaged in in-depth discussions on tourism sustainability and workforce challenges, including training and recruitment.

In addition to the ministerial meeting, Minister Ferrada represented Canada in various key activities. She participated in the World Travel & Tourism Council’s public-private sector dialogue, discussing priorities, challenges, and opportunities for enhanced partnerships. At the UN Tourism Sustainability Forum, she advocated for international cooperation in creating a more inclusive and sustainable global tourism industry. The Minister also held bilateral meetings with key partners, including the United States, Japan, Germany, and Italy.
