Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will announce a new immigration plan that will prohibit businesses violating work visa rules from hiring foreign employees. This announcement will take place during the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, where the Prime Minister will outline his government’s strategy to reduce migration and decrease the UK’s dependence on international workers,

Industries such as healthcare, IT, and hospitality, which heavily rely on foreign workers, will be impacted by the new rules. Companies found in breach of visa regulations will no longer be allowed to hire workers from abroad.

In addition, the Prime Minister’s plan tasks the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) with identifying sectors facing labor shortages that lead to increased international recruitment. The MAC will provide ministers with an annual assessment of these issues.

A report from The Standard has already indicated that the MAC has been asked to review the impact of international worker visa policies implemented by the previous Conservative government. The new regulations may also restrict foreign workers from bringing dependents to the UK and raise salary requirements for work permits.

Prime Minister Starmer is expected to emphasize that while these tough measures might cause short-term difficulties, they will ultimately bring long-term benefits, assuring the public that there is “light at the end of the tunnel.”

Meanwhile, the UK government has intensified efforts to curb irregular migration. According to Home Office data, 1,424 individuals crossed the English Channel in 24 small boats over the weekend, raising the total number of irregular migrants this year to 25,052.
