For those passionate about art and culture, this exhibition is a must-see, offering a diverse showcase of Taitung’s cultural expressions and performances by talented artists.

April Yao, Magistrate of Taitung County, describes Taitung as an irresistible destination, known for its authentic beauty. The county has garnered prestigious awards, including Booking.com’s Travelers Review Award for Most Hospitable Destination and City. Taitung is celebrated not only for its pristine environment and rich natural resources but also for its unique indigenous culture, which adds a special allure to the region. Taitung’s success is built on its deep understanding and promotion of Austronesian culture, with a blend of languages, arts, religions, traditional knowledge, food, and clothing from various ethnic groups inspiring distinctive crafts and modern designs.

As part of the “Ripples of the Pacific” theme, Taitung’s participation at the 2024 FIND Design Fair Asia, often regarded as the Asian equivalent of “Salone del Mobile Milano,” offers an unparalleled opportunity to showcase the county’s Austronesian cultural craftsmanship on an international stage. Beyond promoting the beauty and richness of Taitung’s heritage, the event aims to foster dialogue and cultural exchange, contributing to the global appreciation of Austronesian culture and the slow economy. This exhibition will not only elevate Taitung’s international reputation but also encourage cultural cooperation and exchange.

The exhibition will feature five prominent artisans from Taitung, including Cottonhemp, the Abus Bunun Traditional Weaving Workshop, Jiao, Chen Shu-Yen, and Kuciling Katatepan, showcasing textiles, glasswork, bark, and intricate wood carvings. These artisans will be on-site to engage with the international audience, offering a firsthand look at their craft.

Additionally, the exhibition will display six international residency exchange works centered on Austronesian culture, created by Taitung artisans Chang Chia-Hui, Wang Yu-Ching, and Su Yu-Ting, alongside three international residency artists: contemporary jewelry artist Rudee Tancharoen from Thailand, textile artist Kelly Jin Mei from Singapore, and Tongan tapa painting artist Tui Emma Gillies. The displayed works include bark crafts, mixed media, ceramics, and metalwork, all reflecting the deep cultural roots of the Pacific Islands.

Anu, the lead singer of Bisalzu Music group, will once again perform ancient Bunun chants on the opening day, adding a powerful auditory dimension to the exhibition. The exhibits and performances echo the themes and characteristics of Austronesian culture, allowing Taitung’s charm and rich traditions to shine on the global stage.
